Bucknell University …
 
… is the fourteenth university in the United States to become co-educational.
 
… was first school in the Patriot League to admit women.
 
… was nearly 90 years ahead of many colleges and universities in the United States.


Eveline Stanton Gundy wrote in a 1905 edition of the Bucknell Mirror that William Bucknell “warmly favored allowing women to enter the college. Those who [knew] him well assert that he was influenced to this policy by his belief that a woman should have an education if she wanted it as well as a man, and that economic reasons led him to favor coeducational institutions rather than separate colleges for women.”


The Celebration of 125 years of Co-Education promises to be a rich and memorable experience for the entire Bucknell community. The commemoration will be marked by the reflections of alumni and faculty, panel discussions, a student-faculty research symposium, a celebration luncheon and a faculty-alumni reception. The celebration culminates on Saturday morning with a ceremony to dedicate the 125 Courtyard on the Academic Quad, followed by the Academic Village.
